  WOOD, DUST AND TEARS

The room is small, narrow, thick with the smell of hot wax.
Some fifty candles burn along the walls, wedged into twisted iron sconces and cracks in the wall; their flickering light stretches the shadows, making them sway like listening presences.

At the center, on a massive table, stands the Vincolum Maleficarum.

A dark wooden stock, worn, scored with scratches, grooves and nail marks. Its surface is covered in glued parchments, fragments of yellowed paper on which prayers and invocations can be glimpsed, now partly erased by time, by dirt, and by the hands that have touched them.

The woman sits before the table, her face hidden behind locks of hair wet with tears.
Her wrists are locked in the stocks, trapped in the wood; around her, a few people sit in silence, not daring to break the heavy air that fills the room.

Behind her stands the inquisitor.

His voice, when he speaks, is low but relentless:

— Have you invoked the Devil?
— Have you made pacts that no priest can undo?
— Have you cast curses on houses, on harvests, on your neighbors’ children?

Each question falls like a hammer blow.
The woman answers between sobs, in a faint voice:

— No…
— No…
— I do not want Evil… I renounce it…

For a moment, nothing seems to happen. No one dares break the silence: the woman’s weeping catches in her throat, the candles crackle faintly, all eyes remain fixed on her hands, as if awaiting a sign that does not come.

Then something changes.

The woman’s left hand begins to grow steadily colder, as if the warmth were being drawn away from her very bones; her right hand, by contrast, slowly warms, a sensation of heat at odds with the frigid air of the room. She flinches slightly, but dares not move.

The inquisitor, with a slow gesture, brushes the wood near her wrists, then rests a light hand on the right, then on the left. He notices the difference. He says nothing for several endless seconds.

At last he raises his gaze to those present:

— The Vincolum Maleficarum has delivered its verdict.
— This woman is not in league with the Devil.

A murmur runs through the room.
Someone draws a deep breath, as if they had held it through the entire ordeal; others silently make the sign of the cross.

With a sharp sound of iron and wood, the bolt is drawn back and the woman’s wrists are free once more. She pulls her hands back sharply, clutching her arms to her chest, still trembling. On the Vincolum remain only the scored wood, the grime crusted into its corners, the glued parchments with their prayers, and the marks of those who, before her, did not receive the same verdict.

— Go — says the inquisitor. — You are no witch. You do not serve Evil.

VINCOLUM MALEFICARUM

  LEGNO, POLVERE E LACRIME

La stanza è piccola, stretta, satura dell’odore di cera calda.
Una cinquantina di candele bruciano lungo le pareti, infilate in ferri storti e crepe nel muro; la loro luce tremolante allunga le ombre, le fa oscillare come presenze in ascolto.

Al centro, su un tavolo massiccio, c’è il Vincolum Maleficarum.

Una gogna di legno scuro, consumato, rigato da graffi, solchi e segni di unghie. La superficie è ricoperta da pergamene incollate, frammenti di carta ingiallita su cui si intravedono preghiere e invocazioni ormai parzialmente cancellate dal tempo, dallo sporco e dalle mani che le hanno sfiorate.

La donna siede davanti al tavolo, il viso nascosto dalle ciocche bagnate di lacrime.
I polsi sono serrati nei ceppi, intrappolati nel legno, attorno a lei, poche persone siedono in silenzio, senza osare rompere l’aria pesante che riempie la stanza.

Alle sue spalle, l’inquisitore.

La sua voce, quando parla, è bassa ma implacabile:

— Hai invocato il Demonio?
— Hai stretto patti che nessun sacerdote può sciogliere?
— Hai mandato malefici sulle case, sui raccolti, sui figli dei tuoi vicini?

Ogni domanda cade come un colpo di martello.
La donna risponde tra i singhiozzi, con un filo di voce:

— No…
— No…
— Io non voglio il Male… io lo rinnego…

Per un attimo sembra non accadere nulla. Nessuno osa rompere il silenzio: il pianto della donna si spegne in gola, le candele sfrigolano appena, gli sguardi restano fissi sulle sue mani, come in attesa di un segno che non arriva.

Poi qualcosa cambia.

La mano sinistra della donna comincia a farsi sempre più fredda, come se il calore le venisse risucchiato via dalle ossa; la mano destra, al contrario, si scalda lentamente, una sensazione di tepore che stona con l’aria gelida della stanza. Lei sobbalza appena, ma non osa muoversi.

L’inquisitore, con un gesto lento, sfiora il legno vicino ai polsi, poi posa una mano leggera sulla destra, poi sulla sinistra. Avverte la differenza. Non dice nulla per alcuni interminabili secondi.

Alla fine solleva lo sguardo verso i presenti:

— Il Vincolum Maleficarum ha dato il suo verdetto.
— Questa donna non è in combutta con il Demonio.

Un mormorio attraversa la stanza.
Qualcuno inspira a fondo, come se avesse trattenuto il respiro per tutta la prova; altri fanno il segno della croce in silenzio.

Con un rumore secco di ferro e legno, il chiavistello viene aperto e i polsi della donna sono di nuovo liberi. Lei ritira le mani di scatto, si stringe le braccia al petto, ancora tremante. Sul Vincolum restano solo il legno rigato, lo sporco incrostato negli angoli, le pergamene incollate con le loro preghiere e i segni di chi, prima di lei, non ha ricevuto lo stesso responso.

— Va’ — dice l’inquisitore. — Non sei strega. Non servi il Male.

VINCOLUM MALEFICARUM

L’eccellenza dell’artigianato italiano – cura del dettaglio, gusto per il materiale, ossessione per le finiture – viene qui messa al servizio della magia più oscura: un oggetto da collezione che è al tempo stesso scenografia, strumento e reliquia.
